Background:
Safe schools are essential for student’s physical, intellectual, social and emotional well being.

STUDENTS:

• are accountable to the teacher for their conduct on the school premises, during school hours and during those hours that the teacher is in charge of the pupil in class or while engaged in authorized school activities conducted during out-of-school hours.
• are expected to follow regulations as outlined in the Education Act (1995).
• will follow regulations as required by the Good Spirit School Division Board policy.
• will not use physical violence such as hitting, fighting, inappropriate touching or less overt pressure such as shunning, bullying, hazing or other intimidation.
• will not use initiation practices in any way.
• will refrain from the possession and use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco on school property or on approved extracurricular programs and field trips.

TEACHERS:

• will create a safe environment for all students which is free of violence, intimidation and initiation practices.
• will supply adequate supervision depending on the activity.
• will inform students of expectations for appropriate conduct.
• acting as supervisors and coaches will inform students about the code of conduct and the implications of violations to it.
• as coaches, teachers will adhere to the code of ethics of SHSAA.

ADMINISTRATORS:

• will encourage staff and students to follow the Code of Conduct.
• will ensure that violations to the Code of Conduct are dealt with appropriately.
• will see that the Code of Conduct is displayed in a variety of areas in the school.
• will ensure that the school board’s policy is followed by all individuals.
• will follow the regulations as stated in the Education Act (1995) when dealing with student misbehaviour.

GENERAL RULES:

Punctuality:

Students should be in class at appointed times. Chronic lateness is unacceptable and consequences will be at the teacher's discretion.

Dress Code:

All students are expected to demonstrate a level of good grooming and dress which reflects self-respect and pride in our school.
Students may not wear clothing or exhibit materials which display profanity, inappropriate messages, or promote liquor, beer, any drug or controlled substance.

Students wearing what may be regarded as inappropriate clothing will be asked to change or go to class with school loaned clothing. In some circumstances administration may send students home for failing to observe expected standards.

Unaceptable clothing includes short shorts, tops with spaghetti straps, tube tops, halter tops, mesh shirts, muscle shirts, half-shirts and bare feet.

Outer jackets are to be kept in lockers. They are not to be worn in class.

Students are not allowed to wear hats in the school.

Accidents:

All accidents should be reported to the teacher in charge who will in turn report to the principal.

Smoking:

Melville Comprehensive School is a smoke-free building. Students are not permitted to smoke or use other tobacco products on the grounds or in front of the school or in the student parking lot. Any smoking paraphenalia openly displayed within non-smoking areas may be confiscated from a student.

Cell Phones:

The use of cellular phones is prohibited in the school. Cell phones will be confiscated and kept for an indefinite period of time.

Listening Devices:

The use of listening devices is prohibited in the classroom. Listening devices will be confiscated and kept for an indefinite period of time.

Violence/Abuse :

Violence/abuse is not tolerated in or around our school and will be dealt with in a manner appropriate to the situation.
